Tips and Tricks to get the best rental home experience:

Get the best rental home value:

  • To get the best value, consider shifting your family's Nags Head trip dates to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, , and reduced traffic.
  • The earlier your group can book a rental home, the better your selection will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation property up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your property manager if special discounts are available for your group before you book.
  • Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Often, rental management companies supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines which include special offers, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Select vacation dates and budget.
  • Private Pool, Hot Tub
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. If not, email or call the property manager before you book the vacation home. Note that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds. You will need to establish what bed configuration is suitable for your trip.
  • Are you visiting for a single attraction? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of family pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added charges may apply. Ask the host about pet restrictions before booking.

Have a fantastic stay:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Add a note with the instructions to your smartphone, and take a printed copy.
  • Record any damages to the property at check in, and immediately contact the host. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be very helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message prevents many issues.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Often, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Keep your rental home locked while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • On check-out day, take a walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a wonderful stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
