Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Nags Head rental home experience:

Find your perfect vacation home:

  • Summer is high season in the Nags Head area. To find the best value, change your group's vacation to the Spring or Fall seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic.
  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner your group can reserve a vacation rental, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Reserving your rental property up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your rental property.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property management companies frequently offer renters an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Many property management companies supply Nags Head area visitors guide magazines that include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship between the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Finding the best rental home:

  • Choose your vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your group requires. Fred Wood Cottage:Oceanfront, historic, Old Nags Head Style cottage, wide decks! has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If not, email the property management company before you reserve the rental. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to establish what is best for your trip.
  • Are you looking for particular amenities? Most rental search websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Do your family pets travel with you? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or applied to your agreement.

More tips for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the owner's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental at check in, and immediately contact the property manager. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions before, during, or after your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great restaurants and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Local residents can often help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all belongings. Re-check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property one final time and look for any damage. We suggest walking through with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a wonderful vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property manager was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
