Our top Vacation rental booking tips:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Summer is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Book your rental property in the Fall or Spring to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during June, July, and August. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier your group can book, the easier your search will be. The most desirable properties are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property managers usually offer renters an option to buy trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for details.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local articles, travel guides contain deals for local accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Select a group lead, select your vacation dates, and select a maximum budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. 414 - Semi-Ocean Front -South Nags Head -Walking Distance to Nags Head Pier! has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is normally accessible on booking websites. If they are not listed, email the property manager before reserving the property. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes sofa beds.
  • If there's a particular Nags Head destination you are crazy about, keep an eye out for rentals that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. .
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

More tips for your stay:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • To make sure that no damages are linked to your family's visit, inspect for any problem areas upon your arrival. Make contact with the host right away to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having the recorded concerns and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, elevator or washer/dryer. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many difficulties.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. Be a good neighbor. You'll enhance your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a terrific source for finding the best local scenic spots.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can often help. Who better to ask where to find the best seashells, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items on check-out day. Remember to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your family have a terrific stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your rental and/or property management company was terrific, they would love to hear it. If anything was wrong and they failed to fix it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.

Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
