Tricks and tips to get the perfect vacation rental experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • To find the best value, change your vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer warmer temperatures, fewer crowds, and reduced traffic. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Property managers sometimes offer discounts for veterans. Remember to ask your host or property manager if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Property managers frequently offer their guests an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Start by selecting your trip dates and a budget.
  • Note the number beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group needs. Short Walk to Beach, Hot Tub, Bring the Pooch. has 4 bedrooms and 5 bathrooms.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts is often accessible online. If you don't see them listed, call the property manager before reserving your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You'll need to determine what is suitable for your vacation.
  • If there's a specific Nags Head beach you love, keep an eye out for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you'll need to find a rental that allows animals. Request specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Be aware that some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the owner's phone number to your phone. Print and take a copy of check in/check out procedures.
  • To make certain no damages are attributed to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas during check in. Get in touch with the rental manager right away to relay any pre-existing damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Hosts are available to help! Feel free to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers disrupting your peace. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've not otherwise known!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Locals can frequently help. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental property while you are away! Don't let thieves ruin your family vacation.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before departing, walk through the rental property to confirm you've collected everything. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property managers rely on great feedback to compel more reservations. They'll be much obliged for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
