Strategies to get the perfect vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • To get the best value, shift your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall months. May, September, and even October offer pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and greatly reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during June, July, and August.
  • In the Nags Head area, The earlier your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved very early. Booking your vacation home up to 12 months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • Some hosts offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if special discounts are available for your group.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines that include money-saving deals, either offered independently by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

How to pick the best vacation rental:

  • Select a group lead, choose your vacation dates, and select a max budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the bed configuration your family needs. Sunset Views of Roanoke Sound from Beach House. has 3 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed types is usually available online. If you don't see them listed, email the property manager before reserving your rental. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If there's an individual Nags Head attraction you are crazy about, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to ask about wheel chair accessibility, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • If your group is bringing pets, filter your search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for details on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental property. Put the host's information in your smartphone.
  • At Check-in, document any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the host. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a fireplace, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Be respectful. Often times, adjacent homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Remember to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • After your trip, leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to compel future reservations. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't as described, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your review and help them have the best future vacation. Please be fair with your feedback If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
