Vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Finding the best value:

  • The sooner you can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental homes are reserved very early. Reserving your vacation rental up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
  • Summertime is the most expensive season along the coast of NC. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is a good way to save on your vacation rental. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable homes. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years are great times to gather with friends and family at the beach.
  • Some property management companies offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your property manager if special offers are available for your family.
  • Booking websites frequently offer renters an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which normally will cost you between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, travel guides have offers and deals for local restaurants, attractions, and tours.

Choosing the best rental in Nags Head:

  • Begin by choosing the best vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration you need. Steps from Nags Head Beach! 4 Bed, 3 Bath Coastal Bliss, Family\/Kid Friendly has 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is usually available online. Otherwise, contact the property manager before you reserve the vacation home. Note that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you'll need to book a pet-friendly vacation rental. Get details on breed, weight, and type requirements. Be aware that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Does your family require unique amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Additional considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your phone.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or coffee maker. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of issues.
  • Protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Record any issues with the rental at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain time stamps that can be very helpful if damages are assessed.
  • Be a good neighbor. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to charter a fishing boat, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for fishing?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, take a walk through the property to make sure you've collected all personal belongings. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Please make sure to walk through the rental one final time and scan for damage. We suggest walking through with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on great feedback to inspire new bookings. They'll be much obliged for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other families will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.
