How to book the best vacation rental experience:

Sticking to your budget:

  • Booking a rental in the Spring or Fall is a good way to save money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable properties.
  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner your group can book, the better your selection will be. The most desirable vacation homes are reserved early. Reserving your vacation rental 6-12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental property.
  • Some owners offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your host or property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your group before you book.
  • Property management companies frequently offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitors guides which will include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a partnership between the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head area magazine and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Finding the perfect rental:

  • Select vacation dates and max budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. No Wake Zone
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking websites. Otherwise, contact the property owner before booking your home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to determine what is best for your vacation.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event? Try a map search to browse nearby rentals.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Traveling with pets? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs may be applied to your contract.

During your stay:

  • Take a copy of the owner's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental home.
  • To ensure that damages are not linked to your family's stay, make note of any problem areas when you arrive. E-mail the property manager immediately to record any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor. Often, surrounding homes are filled by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking rules reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can usually help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Ensure you protect the property owner (and your things!) by locking the rental while you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • Double-check the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and look for any damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can. If the manager isn't available, ensure that you take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your group have a excellent vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide comments. If your rental property and/or property management company was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was wrong and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
