Vacation rental tips:

Cost saving strategies:

  • Reserve your rental home in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons to get the benefit of gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday near the ocean? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with family and friends at your favorite beach.
  • In the Nags Head area, The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental properties are reserved early. Reserving your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to plan and book your vacation rental.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Property managers frequently offer renters an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for program terms and fees.
  • Often, management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitors guides which include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Choose a designated group leader, choose your dates, and select a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Sea Rose: Oceanfront Condo, Great Ocean Views, Community Pool has 2 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed types is usually available on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, call the property management company before booking your rental. Remember that most property listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Use a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. .
  • Some properties allow pets, and some don't. Acceptable types of pet, weight and breeds may be restricted, and added fees may apply. Ask the host about pets before booking.

During your stay:

  • We recommend storing the host's information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • During check-in, make note of any issues with the property and immediately contact the property manager. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, A/V setup or WIFI setup. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief text message can prevent quite a few concerns.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would back home.
  • Upon check-out, complete a walk-through to make sure you have not forget anything. Make sure to check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the property a final time and scan for damages to contents or the property itself. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host is not available, ensure that you take video of the property to record its condition.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to compel new reservations. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationers will be thankful you shared your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to remedy it.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
