Tricks and tips to get the best rental experience:

Sticking to your spending budget:

  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are reserved early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and book your vacation rental.
  • Summer months are high season in the Nags Head area. Booking a rental in the Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your vacation. Rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of desirable properties.
  • Some owners offer discounts or promotional rates for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your host or property manager if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Booking websites usually offer customers an option to add trip insurance. Trip insurance, which costs between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Often, property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitors guides which include money-saving deals, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship between the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide and coupon books at local shops and grocery stores.

Planning, picking, and booking the perfectrental:

  • Start by having your group choose trip dates and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and the configuration your family requires. Summer Special/RIGHT ACROSS from OCEAN/Fenced yard/pet friendly has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is often available online. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property manager before you reserve the home. Remember that most properties list the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You will need to determine what configuration is suitable for your vacation family.
  • Remember to include your furry companions! Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Make sure to ask before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Extra fees or charges may be applied to your invoice.
  • Is your family looking for unique amenities? Most rental websites include search filters with amenity lists. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all necessary amenities are available and included before reserving a rental.

Know before you go:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Save the directions to your phone, and take a printed copy.
  • Property managers are available to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Ensure you protect the owner (and your things!) by locking the property when you are out, just like you would at home.
  • To make certain that damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, make note of any problem areas upon your arrival. Make contact with the host immediately to relay any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like unpleasant visitors bothering your peaceful home. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great beaches and scenic spots you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just before checking out, take a final walk-through to make sure you haven't forget any personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property managers rely on good reviews to compel new bookings. They'll be thankful for your review. Alternatively, if something went awry, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Remember to be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host had any control over the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to fix it.

Explore room after room filled with décor for your home and coastal fashions for both men and women. Don’t forget the gourmet market, or shop our beautiful linens for your bedroom and bath. We also feature coastal books and fine art, or just a whimsical fun gift to bring home to family and friends. Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
