Tips for getting the best Nags Head vacation home experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Reserve your vacation rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacation rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Booking your Nags Head vacation rental in the Spring or Fall is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rates are lower, and you'll find a better selection of acceptable properties.
  • Property management companies sometimes offer discounts or promotional rates for active duty military and veterans. Make sure to check with your property manager to see if rate reductions are available for your family.
  • Property management companies typically offer customers an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed days as a result of medical-related issues or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide upon arrival. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have coupons for nearby accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Narrow your Search:

  • First and foremost, have your group commit to a vacation week and a max budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. No Worries, Perfect Affordable Family getaway! has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed counts is commonly accessible on booking websites. If not, contact the property manager before booking the rental. Note that most listings specify maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds.
  • If your family is traveling with pets, you must reserve a rental that allows animals. Get information on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Looking for special amenities? Most rental websites include amenity lists and search filters. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Proper accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with a disability. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental

During your stay:

  • Be sure you get the property manager's phone number and entry/exit procedures for your rental home. We recommend storing the manager's information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call can prevent a lot of concerns.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Protect your property!
  • To make sure damages are not linked to your family's visit, inspect the rental for any problem areas during arrival. Call the host right away to relay any damages. If there is a dispute, having a record of problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Frequently, nearby homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can often point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to rent beach equipment, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Double-check the property to make sure that you've packed all belongings on check-out day. Make sure to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Remember to leave feedback! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to drive more bookings. They'll be grateful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something wasn't right, other vacationing families will will be grateful for your experience find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the host could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded expeditiously to solve it.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
