Tips and Tricks for getting the best Nags Head vacation property experience:

When to book & When to go:

  • Summertime is the most expensive season in coastal NC. Booking your Nags Head vacation home in the Fall or Spring is our best tip for saving money on your vacation. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of suitable properties. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer months.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open a year in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Active Duty and veterans of the US Armed forces may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host whether your family qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly costs between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Look for your local Nags Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local information, visitors guides have deals for local tours and attractions.

Selecting the perfect vacation home:

  • Select vacation week and max budget.
  • Oceanfront
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, email or call the property owner before reserving your home. Remember that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you visiting for a specific event or attraction? If so, use a map search to locate nearby properties.
  • Suitable accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • Some rental properties allow pets, and others do not. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the owner about allowable breeds and types before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your smartphone.
  • To ensure that damages are not attributed to your family's visit, inspect for any problem areas during check in. Call the host immediately to report your findings. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having a record of issues and contact attempts will be valuable.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, elevator or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief call prevents many issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and places you would've never otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to find the fresh catch of the day, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • Protect the owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Just before you drive away, walk through the rental property to make sure you've collected all belongings. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, ensure that you take photos of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Leave a review! Property owners rely on excellent reviews to stimulate more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will be thankful you shared your experience find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the property manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
