Every time we walk along a beach some ancient urge disturbs us so that we find ourselves shedding shoes and garments or scavenging among seaweed and whitened timbers like the homesick refugees of a long war. ~Loren Eiseley

Tricks and tips to get the very best Nags Head rental home experience:

Get the most from your spending budget:

  • Summertime is high season in the Nags Head area. Booking in Fall or Spring is our favorite way to save money on your rental home. Rental rates are lower, and you'll find a larger selection of acceptable homes. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer.
  • Reserve your vacation home as soon as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Christmas and Thanksgiving get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners often offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed vacation time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a welcome relief if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Look for your local Nags Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, visitor guides contain coupons for local accommodations, restaurants and tours.

Filter your search:

  • Select vacation dates and spending budget.
  • Determine how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your family needs. Avalon: Old Nags Head Place, Private Pool, Hot Tub has 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise information regarding bedrooms and bed types is regularly available on booking websites. If they are not listed, email or call the property owner before booking the vacation property. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which oftentimes includes pull-out couches. You'll need to work out what is right for your vacation.
  • If there's a particular Nags Head attraction you crave, look for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your desires.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with disabilities. .
  • If your family is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly vacation rental. Make sure to ask for specifics on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Some hosts require additional pet deposits and fees.

Some things to know before you go:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before traveling. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your smartphone.
  • Document any damages to the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the host. We specifically recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a fireplace, intercom or thermostat. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many issues.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like obnoxious vacationers bothering your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and attractions you would've not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to enjoy a steak with a view, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by locking the property while you are out, just like you would at home.
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to make sure that you've packed all of your family's items at departure. Re-check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden belongings. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did your group have a excellent vacation? Many rental managers make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was inoperable and they failed to correct it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.
