How to find the best Nags Head vacation property experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • Book your Nags Head vacation home in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this strategy to reserve larger homes, or to book an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the Summer months.
  • Reserve your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summertime ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may be qualified for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property management company or host if your group qualifies for a discount.
  • Property management companies often offer their guests an option to buy vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which normally costs 1% - 5% of the reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for details.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guides have discounts for local shops and restaurants.

Planning, selecting, and booking yourrental home:

  • Choose a group leader, select your vacation week, and select a spending budget.
  • Note the number bedrooms and the configuration you need. Beautifully decorated Outer Banks vacation home has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our Nags Head rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is normally accessible on booking pages. If they are not listed, reach out to the host before reserving your home. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull-out couches.
  • Visiting for a specific attraction? Try a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Confirm all required amenities are included before reserving a rental.
  • Some properties allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional costs may apply. Ask the property management company about pets before booking.

Know before you go:

  • Review check in & check out procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and save the directions to your smartphone.
  • To make certain damages aren't attributed to your family's visit, inspect the property for any problem areas upon your arrival. message the rental manager immediately to report any damages. If there is a dispute about legal responsibility later, having a record of concerns and contact attempts will be very helpful.
  • Property managers are there to help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be respectful of your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are filled by local residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to get the best breakfast in town, have a great night out, or the best spots for shopping?
  • Lock your rental home while you are out and about. Protect your property!
  • Double-check every room of the vacation property to confirm that you've packed all of your belongings on check-out day. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and look for damages to contents or the property itself. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager isn't available, remember to take photographs of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Remember to leave a review! Property owners rely on great reviews to drive future reservations. They'll be grateful for your review. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other vacationers will appreciate that you share your experience and help them have the best future vacation. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the owner could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.

Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
