Nags Head vacation rental home tips and tricks:

Sticking to a budget:

  • Reserve your rental property in Spring or Fall to get the benefit of beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowded roads, restaurants, and activities. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation near the ocean? Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Years Eve are great times to gather with family and friends at the beach.
  • Reserve your rental as soon as possible. Rental schedules generally become available 12 months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer rentals during Winter holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some property managers offer special rates for veterans and active duty military. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites typically offer customers an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for days missed as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather disasters, as well as evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your property manager for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide magazine when you check-in. If your rental home doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guide magazines have offers and deals for local shops and restaurants.

Planning and picking the perfect Nags Head rental home:

  • Begin by selecting a vacation week and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family requires. Whalebone Oceanfront 4 Bedroom Cottage D has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rental home search.
  • Precise information about bedrooms and bed types is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the property owner before you reserve your home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You will need to establish what configuration is right for your family.
  • Visiting for a single attraction or event? Try a map search to browse nearby properties.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for those with limited mobility. Confirm all required amenities are available and included before reserving a rental
  • Some rentals allow pets, but some don't. Allowable types of dog or cat, weight and breeds may be restricted, and additional charges may apply. Ask the property manager about pets before booking.

More considerations:

  • Review arrival and departure procedures before leaving home. Take a printed copy, and add a note with the directions to your phone.
  • Make a record of any issues with the property at check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We specifically recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are useful if damages are assessed.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or kitchen appliance. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief phone call prevents lots of problems.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like loud visitors bothering your quiet neighborhood. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. If they like you, locals might even recommend great restaurants and scenic spots you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can frequently help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • Just before checking out, take a walk-through to make sure you did not forget any personal items. Re-check bathrooms, garages, and back yards for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Record a video to document the condition of the property.
  • Did you have a terrific time? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for guests to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was fantastic, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
