Strategies to get the perfect vacation property experience:

How to get the best rental home value:

  • To find the best value, try changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, less crowded beaches, and greatly reduced traffic.
  • The sooner you can book, the easier your search will be. The best vacation rentals are booked very early. Booking your rental home up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Holidays such as Christmas and Thanksgiving are excellent times to search for and reserve your vacation home.
  • Some hosts offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Ask your host or property manager if discounts are available for your family.
  • Booking websites usually offer customers an option to purchase vacation insurance protection. Trip insurance, which generally will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or additional gasoline expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head area magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local information, visitor guides contain coupons for nearby accommodations, tours and attractions.

Narrow your rental Search:

  • Choose dates and max budget.
  • Determine how many beds and the configuration your group needs. Coastal Dunes 1: Oceanfront Cottage in Nags Head, Great Views! has 1 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is usually accessible on booking websites. If not, email the property owner before you reserve your rental. Note that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to establish what bed configuration is right for your vacation.
  • Looking for specific amenities? Most rental websites include search filters for amenities. Amenity filters help you quickly remove less-optimal properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for persons with disabilities. Remember to confirm all necessary amenities are available before reserving a rental
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, search for a pet-friendly property. Request information on breed, size, and type restrictions. Often, property owners charge additional pet fees.

Additional considerations:

  • Take a copy of the property manager's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental home.
  • To ensure that damages aren't linked to your family's stay, inspect the rental for any problem areas when you arrive. Call the host immediately to document any damages. If there is a dispute about who is responsible, having the recorded problems and contact attempts will be helpful.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of problems.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking policies can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors can be a fantastic resource to find the best local attractions.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Lock your rental home while you are away. Keep your property safe!
  • When it's time to leave, take a final walk-through to make sure you did not forget anything. Remember to check bathrooms, dressers, and closets for hidden treasure. Clean the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Go through the property a final time and look for damage. We advise inspecting the property with the property manager whenever possible. If the property manager is not available, ensure that you take pictures of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did you have a terrific stay? Many vacation rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide feedback. If your property and/or property management company was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't as described, you'll want to make a note as part of your comments.
