Our top Nags Head rental booking tips and tricks:

When to visit Nags Head & When to reserve a Nags Head rental home:

  • The sooner your group can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable rental homes are booked very early. Reserving your vacation home six - twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Holiday gatherings are excellent times to search for and reserve your rental.
  • Summer months are high season in Nags Head. To find the best value, consider shifting your group's vacation week to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and October offer excellent weather, , and greatly reduced traffic.
  • Owners sometimes offer discounts for veterans and active duty military. Remember to ask your property manager if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies usually offer guests an option to buy vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which commonly will cost you 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any days missed as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for details.
  • Many rental management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guides which will include special deals, either offered directly by local businesses, or by way of a relationship with the rental management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to narrow your rental search:

  • Choose your vacation week and spending budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and what type of bedroom configuration your family requires. Beach Dream at Admirals View has 2 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms.
  • Precise descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking pages. If not, email or call the property owner before you book your home. Remember that most properties list maximum guest capacity, which usually includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to work out what is right for your trip.
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Remember to ask your host before booking, and study your agreement thoroughly! Additional fees or charges applied to your invoice.
  • If there's a certain Nags Head attraction you are crazy about, look for properties that are either nearby, or those that cater especially to your desires.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Confirm all required amenities are included before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a garage door opener, A/V setup or appliance. Contact your owner. They are there to help! A brief phone call can prevent quite a few issues.
  • Lock your rental property while you're gone! Don't let thieves spoil your holiday.
  • During arrival, make note of any issues with the property and immediately alert the owner. Record all coorespondence.
  • Respecting quiet hours and parking regulations can make a stay more pleasurable. You will magnify your chance to make local friends, and resident neighbors are a great resource to find the best local spots.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Locals can typically point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to launch your kayaks, have a great night out, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to confirm you didn't forget any personal items. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Walk through the property a final time and scan for damage. We recommend walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager is not available, remember to take photos and video of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a great stay? Most rental websites make it easy for clients to provide comments. If your rental property and/or host was wonderful, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was amiss and they failed to fix it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.

Ben Franklin

Stop by Nags Head's Ben Franklin at Mile Post 10 on the Bypass where you will find everything you need for the beach! From Clothing, T-shirts and Swimwear to Boards, Chairs, Umbrellas and Tackle. You'll find it all…and of course, we have the best selection of Souvenirs anywhere on the Outer Banks. Enjoy your vacation! Independently owned by a member of one of the Outer Banks’ oldest families, the Ben Franklin store is stocked with just about everything a visitor would need to go to the beach.

Ben Franklin stores were once part of a five-and-dime retail empire, with about 2,500 locations across the country in its heyday. As decades passed and the times and customers began to change, many closed their doors, leading to fewer than 150 of these nostalgic shops. Nags Head Ben Franklin, however, has withstood the test of time and adapted to the needs of its customers to provide a memorable shopping experience on the Outer Banks.

Debbie Terry Tolson, manager of the Ben Franklin location in Nags Head, recalls working with former owner Tommie Daniels. Daniels’ father, Moncie Daniels, started the business in downtown Manteo in the early 1900s. The Daniels family has been a longstanding fixture in the Outer Banks business community—Moncie even sold gas to the Wright brothers in 1903.

Tommie, with an excellent business mind, saw the opportunity the new Bypass presented and, in 1977, he opened the Nags Head location of Ben Franklin. He was one of the first businesses on the Bypass,” Tolson says.In addition to a new location, the Ben Franklin store saw a new group of customers.

“People would come from all around because Tommie had a little bit of everything—it was more like a five and 10 then,” Tolson explains. “As he went to the beach, he began to get more tourists, so he started catering more and more to visitors.”

Today, the 21,000-square-foot souvenir shop quickly catches the attention of anyone driving by thanks to the ocean-themed mural that decorates the façade of the building, painted by local artist Rob Snyder. This Ben Franklin location has become the must-stop shop for both first-time visitors to the area and generations of families who escape to the Outer Banks annually.

Tolson credits the great prices and friendly customer service to the success of the location, which keeps families returning.“People come in all the time and tell me, ‘my grandmother or my grandfather used to bring me here and now I’m bringing my children,’” she shares. “One of my favorite parts about working here is seeing the people come back year after year.”
