Tips and Tricks to get the perfect Nags Head vacation home experience:

When to visit & When to book:

  • In the Nags Head area, The earlier your group can reserve a vacation home, the better your selection will be. The best properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation home up to twelve months before your vacation is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and book your rental property.
  • Summer is high season in the Nags Head area. To find the largest rental home within your budget, we highly recommend booking in the Fall or Spring shoulder seasons. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, gorgeous weather and the absence of giant crowds at the beach and popular Nags Head attractions. Many vacationers use this method to reserve larger homes, or to book a beach front vacation rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the Summer. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook Winter holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with loved ones at your favorite beach.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective property owner or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special rate.
  • Booking websites typically offer renters an option to purchase trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which usually will cost 1% - 5% of the booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for missed vacation time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as hurricane evacuation charges, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Find a copy of your local Nags Head visitors guide magazine when you arrive at the rental property. If your rental property doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local grocery stores and visitor centers. In addition to great local stories, visitors guide magazines have discounts for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • Choose a group leader, select your dates, and select a max budget.
  • Note the number beds and the configuration your family requires. Phelps: Semi-oceanfront w\/private pool, hot tub, rec and media room & elevator! has 5 bedrooms and 6 bathrooms. If you need a larger or smaller rental, use our rentals search.
  • Specific details about bedrooms and bed counts & types is commonly accessible on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, email the property management company before reserving the vacation property. Note that most property listings specify the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • If your group is traveling with pets, filter your search for a rental that allows animals. Make sure to ask for information on breed, weight, and type requirements. Note that some property owners charge pet deposits and fees.
  • Is your group looking for special amenities? Most websites include amenity lists and search filters.
  • Proper accessibility can make or break a vacation for guests that require the use of a wheelchair. Make certain to inquire about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.

Have a wonderful stay:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a garage door opener, intercom or thermostat. Contact your host. They are there to help! A brief call prevents a lot of problems.
  • Lock your vacation home while you're out. Keep your property safe!
  • Record any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that can be helpful if a dispute arises.
  • Respect the neighborhood. Frequently, adjacent homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting noise limits and parking policies reduces conflict and allows everyone to enjoy their day.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Neighbors can frequently help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to take kids for a treat, have a great night out, or the best spots for fine dining?
  • On check-out day, complete a final walk-through to make sure you did not leave anything behind. Check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take any leftovers home.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We advise walking through with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the host is not available, take photos of the property to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your family have a wonderful stay? Most rental home management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they would love to hear it. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it within reason, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your review.
