Strategies for getting the perfect rental experience:

When to visit Nags Head & When to book:

  • Book your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules usually open a year in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups book their Summer rentals during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years Eve get-togethers. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in coastal NC. Reserve your rental in the Fall or Spring to enjoy gorgeous weather while saving money and avoiding crowds.
  • Hosts sometimes offer discounts for active duty military and veterans. Check with your host or property manager to see if discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites usually offer renters an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which usually costs anywhere between 1% - 5% of the stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of medical-related emergencies or weather, as well as ensuing additional evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your host for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies supply Nags Head area visitors guide magazines which will include coupons, either offered independently by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head visitors guide magazine and coupon books at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers.

Use filters to search efficiently:

  • First and foremost, have your group decide on date ranges and a budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your group requires. Giggling Gecko: Oceanfront home has all you need - private pool, hot tub, and wa has 8 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.
  • Specific information regarding bedrooms and bed types is almost always available on booking pages. If you don't see them listed, contact the property owner before you book the home. Note that most listings specify the max. guest capacity, which frequently includes pull out couches in living rooms.
  • Are you traveling with furry, four-legged family members? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Remember to ask the property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional pet fees or charges applied to your contract.
  • Are you looking for special amenities? Most rental search websites include amenity lists and search filters. Use these to your advantage to find the perfect rental home.
  • Proper accessibility can make or ruin a vacation for persons with a disability. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.

More tips for your visit:

  • Get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental property.
  • Hosts are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Keep the property locked while you're away! Don't let thieves spoil your trip.
  • Upon check-in, record any damages to the property and immediately alert the property manager. Record all correspondence just in case a dispute arises.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like disagreeable vacationers bothering your peace and quiet. Practice the golden rule for common sense. Happy residents may even recommend great beaches and places you would have not otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local! Local residents can frequently point you in the right direction. Who better to ask where to order delicious takeout, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before you drive away, take a walk through the rental to make sure you've collected all of your things. Check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden treasure. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the property one final time and keep an eye out for damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the property manager whenever you can (often this isn't possible). If the manager is not available, take pictures of the rental to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a terrific stay? Most vacation rental websites make it easy for clients to provide feedback. If your property and/or property manager was great, they always love to hear your praise. If anything was defective and they failed to address it in a reasonable manner, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your review.
