Vacation rental tips and tricks:

Getting the most from your rental budget:

  • June, July, and August are the most expensive months in the Nags Head area. To find the largest vacation home for your budget, we recommend booking in Spring or Fall. You'll enjoy lower rental rates, better selection, beautiful weather and the absence of giant crowds at popular Nags Head attractions and restaurants.
  • Reserve your rental as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open 12 months in advance (or in September just after Summer ends). Many families reserve their Summer vacations during Christmas and Thanksgiving gatherings. Book before these holidays for best selection.
  • Veterans and Active Duty Military members may qualify for special discounts. Be sure to ask your prospective vacation rental company or host if your vacationing group qualifies for a special promotion or discount.
  • Management companies and individual rental owners frequently offer guests an option to obtain trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base reservation price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as hurricane evacuation costs or charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or additional gas expenses. Trip insurance might be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for program terms and fees.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area travel guides which will include coupons, either offered directly by local companies, or by way of a relationship with the property management company and the business itself. You can also find Nags Head area magazine and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

Filter your rental search:

  • Begin by choosing potential vacation weeks and a spending budget.
  • Decide how many bedrooms and the bed configuration you need. Circa 1953 beach cottage...this is 'old school' beach at it's best! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Precise details about bedrooms and bed sizes & counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If you don't see them listed, reach out to the host before you reserve the home. Note that most property listings specify maximum guest capacity, which typically includes pull-out couches and bunk beds. You'll need to determine what is right for your vacation group.
  • Visiting for a single event? Use a map search to locate nearby rentals.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about specialized equipment and wheel chair accessibility.
  • Some properties allow pets, but others do not. Acceptable types of dog or cat, size and breeds may be restricted, and additional fees may apply. Ask your host about allowable pet guidelines before booking.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Add the property manager's contact info to your phone. Take a copy of arrival/departure procedures.
  • Document any issues with the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the owner. We especially recommend e-mails and text messages, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are beneficial if damages are attributed to your stay.
  • Hosts are there to help! Feel free to ask any questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors bothering your peaceful neighborhood. Employ the golden rule for common sense. If they like you, locals might even recommend great local food and attractions you would have never otherwise known about!
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Residents can usually help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to book the best tours, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Protect the property owner (and your things!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are away, just like you would at home.
  • Don't leave anything behind! Before departing, take a walk through the property to confirm you've collected all of your things. Re-check closets, dressers, garages, and bathrooms for hidden belongings. Clean out the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Inspect the rental a final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We advise walking through with the host whenever possible. If the manager isn't available, remember to take photos and video of the rental to record its condition at check-out.
  • Did your group have a terrific vacation? Most rental websites make it easy for vacationers to provide reviews. If your rental property and/or host was great, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was imperfect and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make a note as part of your feedback.
