Tricks and tips to get the best Nags Head vacation home experience:

Get the best value:

  • Summer months are high season in Nags Head. To get the best value, try changing your group's vacation dates to the Spring or Fall shoulder seasons. May, September, and even October offer great weather, less crowded beaches, and reduced traffic. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to book an oceanfront rental that would otherwise be unavailable during the high season.
  • Book your vacation home as early as possible. Rental schedules generally open twelve months in advance (or in September just after the Summer season ends). Many groups reserve their Summer vacations during holiday get-togethers. Reserve before these holidays for best selection.
  • Some hosts and property managers offer special rates for veterans. It's always a good idea to check with your property manager to see if discounts are available for your group.
  • Property management companies typically offer guests an option to buy trip insurance protection. Trip insurance, which will generally cost 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for any missed time as a result of personal medical-related emergencies or weather disasters, as well as evacuation charges, such as an unexpected hotel stay or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance can be a a life-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask the property owner for additional information.
  • Find a copy of your local visitors guide upon checking in. If your rental property doesn't have one, you can find them at local grocery stores, shopping centers, and visitor centers. In addition to great local articles, travel guide magazines have offers and deals for local attractions, tours, restaurants, and shops.

Selecting and booking a perfectrental:

  • Choose vacation week and maximum budget.
  • Determine how many bedrooms and the configuration your family needs. Circa 1953 beach cottage...this is 'old school' beach at it's best! has 2 bedrooms and 1 bathrooms.
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts is almost always accessible on booking websites. If not, reach out to the host before you reserve your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which usually includes pull-out couches. You'll need to establish what is right for your trip.
  • If there's a certain Nags Head destination you are enamored with, keep an eye out for properties that are either near by, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. .
  • Are you bringing the family pet? Many vacation homes allow animals, but guidelines and restrictions apply. Allowable pet type, breed, and size are often limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your agreement! Additional fees or costs could be applied to your invoice.

Considerations for your stay:

  • Be sure you get the host's phone number and arrival/departure procedures for your rental.
  • Upon arrival, make note of any damages to the rental property and immediately contact the owner. Keep records of all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Ask questions. You may want instructions for a hot tub, television set or thermostat. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent many difficulties.
  • Respect your neighbors. Often times, nearby homes are occupied by local residents. Respecting late-night quiet hours and parking rules can make a stay significantly more pleasurable.
  • Don't forget to... Ask a local resident! Neighbors can typically help. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night on the town, or the best spots for crabbing?
  • Lock your rental while you are out and about. Keep your property safe!
  • Re-check every room of the rental property to confirm that you've packed all of your family's items at check-out. Remember to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Clean the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Leave a review! Property managers rely on good ratings to compel more bookings. They'll be thankful for your feedback. Alternatively, if something went wrong, other families will appreciate that you share your feedback find their best rental home. Please be objective. If something fell short of expectations, consider whether the manager could control the issue, and if so, whether they responded reasonably to remedy it.
