Great Gut Deli is located in Wanchese at the southernmost tip of Roanoke Island. It’s a small family-owned and operated deli that prides itself in its homemade specialties and its use of only the freshest available ingredients.
The deli features turkey, ham, pastrami and beef subs and sandwiches, along with salads and a kids menu. Also on the menu are shrimp and chicken salad and what one reviewer says is the “best tuna fish salad ever.” Great Gut’s specialty sandwiches include a Pastrami Reuben with sauerkraut, an Italian Cold Cut Sub and a Meatball Sub.
The deli also serves homemade soups and daily specials you can find posted on their facebook page.
All online reviewers give the deli thumbs up on food and service, and its location on the Wanchese waterfront across from Oregon Inlet is another plus - providing spectacular views of the Roanoke Sound.
Considered one of the “best lunch spots on the island," accessible by land or boat, Great Gut Deli is part of Thicket Lump Marina, now under renovation. The marina has offered charter fishing, dockage, bait and tackle, fuel and other services to visitors and locals for years and is scheduled to reopen in 2014.
