Owned by Outer Banks former professional surfer Kelly Hines and his wife Whitney, Surfin’ Spoon,on the Beach Road right across from the ocean,is a great place to take a break from the beach, or after a long day of surfing. Featuring big benches with comfy cushions to hang out on, or stools to pull up to the bar behind the benches, folks can enjoy some delicious and healthy frozen yogurt while watching surf films on the big screen TV.
For the kiddies, there’s a teeny-eeny table and chairs where they can sit and enjoy kid gossip in view of watchful grown-up eyes. You can choose the flavor of your frozen yogurt from self-serve machines with levers. Choices include blueberry, coconut, “plain ol’” chocolate and vanilla, watermelon, and many others, and the yogurt is made with dairy milk, real fruit purees and has live yogurt cultures. No-sugar, low fat and non-dairy frozen yogurt options are also available. The toppings, also self-help, are exceptional: various kinds of sliced fresh fruit; Cap’n Crunch cereal; chocolate chips; various types of nuts; cookie pieces; variety of candy; and marshmallows. Of course, there are also lots of yummy syrups to choose from.
When it’s all assembled, the entire treat is weighed. So the more you get, the more you pay. Then again, the more you enjoy! If you don’t feel like sitting, you can enjoy looking at the surfing memorabilia and classic Outer Banks photographs displayed in the room, which is decorated appealingly in ocean colors. There is also a game room located off the main room, and WiFi is available for those who want to do some surfin’ of their own.
