How to find the best rental experience:

How to get the best rental value:

  • Summer time is high season in Nags Head. Book your rental property in Fall or Spring to enjoy beautiful weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this method to find larger homes within budget, or to reserve an oceanfront vacation rental that would otherwise be unavailable or unaffordable during the high season. Speaking of the off-season, don't overlook the holidays for a Nags Head vacation! Who wouldn't love a holiday vacation on the coast? Thanksgiving and Christmas are great times to gather with friends and family at your favorite beach.
  • The earlier your group can book a vacation home, the easier your search will be. The best rental properties are booked very early. Booking your vacation property up to twelve months before your vacation dates is recommended. Winter holidays are excellent times to plan and reserve your rental home.
  • Hosts and Property managers sometimes offer rate reductions for active duty military and veterans. Check with your property manager to see if special offers are available for your group.
  • Property managers usually offer their guests an option to obtain vacation insurance. Trip insurance, which usually will cost you anywhere between 1% - 5% of the base booking price, offers visitors reimbursement of costs for missed time as a result of medical-related catastrophes or weather, as well as ensuing additional hurricane evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel overnight or extra fuel expenses. Trip insurance can be a a bank account-saver if the unforeseen happens. Ask your property manager for more information.
  • Look for your local visitors guide when you check-in. If your rental doesn't have a copy, you can find them at local shops and fuel stations. In addition to great local stories, visitors guides contain deals for nearby tours, shops, and attractions.

Choosing the best rental home in Nags Head:

  • First and foremost, have your family commit to the best dates and a maximum budget.
  • Nags Head
  • Specific information about bedrooms and bed counts & types is often accessible on booking websites. If not, call the property management company before you reserve the vacation home. Remember that most listings specify the maximum guest capacity, which typically includes sofa beds in living rooms. You will need to determine what bed configuration is optimal for your vacation family.
  • Are you visiting for a specific attraction or event? If so, use a map search to find nearby properties.
  • Appropriate accessibility can make or break a vacation for the less-mobile. Make certain to ask about wheel chair entry, pool lifts and specialized equipment needs.
  • Traveling with pets? Although a number of vacation homes allow pets or animals, guidelines and costs vary per property. Type of pet, size and breeds may be limited. Ask your property manager before booking, and study your rental agreement! Additional fees or applied to your contract.

Know before you go:

  • Be sure you get the owner's contact number and check in/check out procedures for your rental.
  • Make a record of any damages to the rental during check in, and immediately e-mail them to the property manager. We especially recommend texts and e-mails, as they usually contain built-in time stamps that are very helpful if a dispute is filed.
  • Property managers are great sources of help! Don't be shy to ask questions during your stay.
  • Be a good neighbor! You wouldn't like troublesome visitors disrupting your peaceful home. Apply the golden rule for best judgement. Happy residents may even recommend great local food and places you would've not otherwise known!
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Residents can typically help you find the best spots in town. Who better to ask where to find the best bike paths, have a great night out, or the best spots for BBQ?
  • Protect the property owner (and your stuff!) by keeping the rental locked up when you are gone, just like you would at home.
  • Double-check the property to confirm that you've packed all belongings at check-out. Make sure to check dressers, closets, and bathrooms for hidden items. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Document the condition of the property at check-out. We recommend taking a video during your final walk-through.
  • Did your group have a great vacation? Most rental management companies make it easy for vacationers to provide feedback. If your rental property and/or property management company was fantastic, they will likely appreciate your kind words. If anything was out of order and they failed to correct it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your feedback.

Stop by soon and don’t forget to try our estate grown wines in our stores or visit our vineyard and winery, Sanctuary Vineyards, located adjacent to the original Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg.

Most know The Cotton Gin as a must-stop shop for fine gifts, beachwear, souvenirs and so much more, but this retailer has a long-standing history within the Outer Banks. A local landmark that holds almost a century of memories, The Cotton Gin started from humble beginnings and continues to adapt to the times and tourists. Tommy Wright’s family has been in the Outer Banks for nearly 200 years. His great-great grandfather, Jacob Francis Wright, shipwrecked in Duck back in the early 1800s. Calling these barrier islands his new home, Wright and his family acclimated to their new environment.

Adaptation is a common theme for the Wright family. Tommy and his wife Candace, who continue to steer The Cotton Gin, have seen not only their business change with the times, but the Outer Banks as a vacation destination as well. A farm market in Jarvisburg eventually transformed and flourished into several retail locations dotting the Outer Banks.

“As the area changed and tourism took off in the 1960s, the family saw people coming for vacations, so they began to grow vegetables and things developed from there,” says Tommy Wright. The Wright family expanded upon the farm market and began to remodel a working cotton gin, later transforming the gin into The Cotton Gin general store in the late 1960s. While the additions to the farm store drew visitors, it was their encounters with the Wright family that kept people coming back year after year, which is something that remains true today.
