Tricks and tips for getting the perfect Nags Head vacation home experience:

Getting the most from your spending budget:

  • The earlier you can book a rental home, the easier your search will be. The most desirable vacation rentals are reserved early. Reserving your rental up to 12 months before your vacation is recommended. Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years Eve are excellent times to search for and book your rental.
  • Summer months are high season in Nags Head. Book your rental home in Fall or Spring months to enjoy warm weather while saving money and avoiding crowds. Many vacationers use this strategy to find larger homes within budget, or to book a beach front rental that would otherwise be unaffordable during the high season.
  • Hosts sometimes offer rate reductions for veterans and active duty military. Check with your host or property manager to see if special discounts are available for your family before you book.
  • Booking websites frequently offer guests an option to purchase trip insurance. Trip insurance, which generally will cost between 1% - 5% of the base stay price, offers visitors reimbursement of their vacation costs for any missed trip time as a result of personal medical-related issues or weather, as well as evacuation costs, such as an unanticipated hotel or extra gas expenses. Trip insurance is definitely a life-saver if the unforeseen occurs. Ask your host for specifics.
  • Many property management companies and vacation rental houses supply Nags Head area visitor guide magazines that include coupons, either offered directly by local businesses, or through a relationship with the management company and the business itself. You can also find visitors guide and coupon books at local gas stations and shopping centers.

How to pick the best vacation rental in Nags Head:

  • Begin by selecting the best vacation week and a budget.
  • Decide how many beds and what type of bedroom configuration your group requires. Canal-front gem with boat dock - close to shopping, restaurants, & beach has 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.
  • Specific descriptions of bedrooms and bed counts & types is regularly available on booking websites. If not, call the property owner before booking your rental. Note that most properties list the max. guest capacity, which often includes sofa beds. You'll need to work out what is suitable for your family.
  • If your group is vacationing with pets, you must book a property that allows animals. Ask for details on breed, weight, and type restrictions. Note that some property managers require additional pet deposits and fees.
  • If there's a specific Nags Head destination you are crazy about, search for homes that are either nearby, or those that cater to your needs.
  • Appropriate accessibility amenities can make or break a vacation for guests with disabilities. Confirm all necessary amenities are available before booking

Additional considerations:

  • Put the owner's contact information in your smartphone and wallet.
  • Ask questions. You may need instructions for a hot tub, television set or WIFI setup. Contact your property manager. They are there to help! A brief telephone call can prevent lots of issues.
  • Ensure you protect the rental owner (and your stuff!) by locking and securing the home when you are gone, just like you would back home.
  • During check-in, note any issues with the property and immediately contact the owner. Record all correspondence in case a dispute arises.
  • Don't forget to respect your neighbors. Often times, surrounding homes are occupied by permanent residents. Respecting late-night noise limits and parking rules is the right thing to do.
  • Speaking of neighbors... Ask a local! Local residents can typically help you find exactly what you're looking for. Who better to ask where to get the best seafood, have a great night out, or the best spots for bird watching?
  • Just prior to departing, take a final walk-through to make sure you didn't leave anything behind. Make sure to check garages, decks, and cabinets for hidden treasure. Remove everything from the refrigerator and take or dispose of leftovers.
  • Go through the rental one final time and keep an eye out for any damage. We recommend inspecting the property with the host whenever you can. If the host isn't available, take video and pictures of the property to record its condition.
  • Did your family have a terrific time? Most rental websites make it easy for travelers to provide reviews. If your rental and/or host was wonderful, they would love to hear about it. If anything was defective and they failed to address it reasonably, or if the vacation rental wasn't described correctly, you'll want to make it a point as part of your comments.
